A common misconception is that BV is caused by poor hygiene. In fact, anything that changes the chemistry of your vagina´s pH balance can mess with bacteria levels and lead to infection. Often excessive cleaning with harsh soaps or fragranced products can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria making the area less acidic and allowing certain bacteria to thrive.

The main symptom of bacterial vaginosis is lots of thin vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell. The discharge may be white, dull gray, greenish and/or foamy. The fishy smell is often more noticeable after vaginal sex. Also, you may have a little burning or itching when you pee, but many women don´t have any irritation or discomfort.

Tips to avoid bacterial vaginosis:

  • Wear cotton underwear.
  • No douching, i.e washing or cleaning out the vagina with water.

  • Avoid washing too often!
  • Pat dry after washing, bathing or exercising.

  • Use pH balanced products for your intimate parts like VagiVital V-Cleanser.
  • Always contact your doctor if you have symptoms lasting for weeks. BV is easy to diagnose and treat.
